Blackhawk commenced operations in the spring of 2012. With 12 million tons of reserves, it is one of the few remaining surface mines of larger size in Illinois. Blackhawk is located about 1.5 miles from Prairie Eagle. The majority of coal from Blackhawk is processed at the nearby Prairie Eagle Prep Plant. The mine employs 50 people.
